Ode to the Jabberwock

Ode to the Jabberwock began as an idea two years ago. The opening few lines of Lewis Carroll’s poem, made famous by the book Alice in Wonderland, are featured in cerne relief writing within this piece.

”‘Twas brillig, and slighthy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe. All mimsy were the borogroves and the mome raths outgrabe.

Beware the Jabberwock my son, the jaws that bite, the claws that snatch, beware the Jubjub bird and shun the frumious Bandersnatch.”

Helpless

Helpless was painted during the hardest time of my life. The soundtrack to this painting was Neil Young’s track of the same name. There are multiple lyrics within this painting. Not so hidden or as subtle as some of my other works.

”‘Blue, blue windows behind the stars, yellow moon on the rise.

Big birds flying across the sky. Throwing shadows on our eyes.

Leave us. Helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless.”

Available to buy.
1500 X 1000 X 2 cm.

Deep Sea Blues

Deep Sea Blues was soundtracked by Lost in Space from Neil Young’s Hawks and Doves album. Neil is a favourite of mine and I get lost in his lyrics. Look for some of the hidden lyrics in black cerne relief writing.

”‘Lost in space

I heard you were lost in space

That’s such a lonely place for you to be.

Losing you

I heard I was losing you

That’s not the only thing that I got lose, I got to lose

The deep sea blues

Look at these blues, the deep sea blues,

Look at these blues, I got the deep sea blues”

Hung with Jewels

Hung with Jewels are just some of the beautiful lyrics taken from Echo and the Bunnymen’s track The Killing Moon. The song behind the inspiration for this piece.

In starlight night I saw you

So cruelly you kissed me

Your lips a magic world

Your sky all hung with jewels

I’ll Be Free

I’ll be Free contains the hidden lyric from David Bowie’s last released song Lazarus. Taken from his final album Black Star, released two days before he died.

Look up here, I’m in heaven.

I’ve got scars that can’t be seen.

I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen, everybody knows me now.

This way on no way, you know I’ll be free

Just like that bluebird

Now, ain’t that just like me?

Oh I’ll be free

Just like that bluebird

Oh, I’ll be free
